What is an international transaction fee?
An international transaction fee applies when you make a purchase using your Visa Debit or Credit Card while you’re:
- You’re overseas, or
- You’re in Australia, but the transaction involves an overseas merchant or financial institution. This can happen with online purchases or when paying over the phone to an overseas business.
The international transaction fee is 3.00% of the transaction amount, regardless of whether it’s converted from a foreign currency or already in Australian dollars.
Important: Just because a merchant has a “.com.au” website or shows prices in Australian dollars doesn’t mean they’re based in Australia. Always check with the merchant if you’re unsure where your payment will be processed. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to check with the merchant before making a payment.
